Armenian-Australian Thrasher Mat Demaz Prepares for Big Plans (Interview) (12-6-2017)

Here’s an interview I did last month.

Enjoy.

https://matdemaz.com///?p=1613

Jacky (The Extreme Tour):

Hey Matt, thanks for taking your time out to do a back-n-forth with us!

Mat Demaz:

No problem at all, thanks for asking!

Jacky:

I’ve heard a lot of your music, you seem to cover a wide range of genres.

Mat Demaz:

Ever since I was little, I’ve been into music. I live and breathe it. It’s my escape, my therapy, my waifu. Once you get it in your blood, it’s there forever. I ended up indulging in a lot of different types of music at an early age. It really helped me through some tough times. When you hear a record from me, whether it’s my own original songs, or beats I produce, you hear a piece of that feeling I had over 15 years ago.

Jacky:

I’ve heard you’ve been getting a lot of trolls on your ass recently. Got any idea why?

Mat Demaz:

Ever since my YouTube, Bandcamp and whatnot has blown up, everyone seems to wanna come out of the woodwork and start drama. I won’t mention any names, but my subs and fans handle that shit for me. Most of these guys were naysayers when my music was crap. It’s just not my thing to go after people. I got work to do, songs to mix, videos to publish. All the cliche drama will have to wait. I have to look after my mother and make sure she’s alright. Make sure everything is alright.

Jacky:

When did you get into metal?

Mat Demaz:

Around 2000-2002 when I listened to Limp Bizkit and System of a Down. It kinda trips me out that System was one of the first bands I got into, seeing I found out recently I have an Armenian background. It was like it was meant to be. All the oppression I’ve felt in my life extends far beyond me. Since 1915, all the poor people who were slaughtered in the Armenian Genocide for their religious beliefs are like a demon in my head. Whenever I need inspiration for a heavy song, I channel their screams out of my mouth. All thew aggression is a good release. In public, I’m a pupp dog. It’s pretty cool. It’s also ironic how when people say that nu metal bands killed metal, etc. But if it wasn’t for System and all that, I would of never found Metallica, Soulfy, Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Exodus, Sepultura, Testament, Kreator, all that crazy stuff that some elitist would call “real metal.” I’m kidding, but you get the point.

Jacky:

How your live performances going?

Mat Demaz:

Eh… I’ve done shows here and there in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. But I wanna go back to Los Angeles and play there. The only problem is that I don’t have any friends there. I mean, people in Glendale would support me, but I don’t know anyone else around the area. I’ve always been a Brisbane boy, but the scene there is slipping. Since Soundwave fell through, nothing happens. Brisbane is the safest city in Australia for a reason, a lot of people don’t have ambition. With ambition, comes greed in some, and eventually crime, suffering, death. I prefer Brisbane, but L.A. looks so dog-eat-dog. I would still like to at least give it a shot. The Roxy, Whisky, Viper Room would be good targets. buying tickets or paying to play is a huge pain in the ass, though. But, if I have that springboard to bounce of of, the circle of buddies and fans, I should be able to pack those places. My music can really pump up a crowd. My insane compositions and screaming makes people lose their minds.

Jacky:

Care to explain 3 to us?

Mat Demaz:

It seems like everyone is just in it for the money. Sure, I wanna get paid, but I wann pay bills and upgrade my gear, not spend it on pointless shit. A lot of people want something for nothing. That’s not balance. Each Patreon I see up begging for cash for stupid reasons makes me sick. All the hours I spend recording and making pennies, some YouTube streamer can make a cool 200+ bucks twirling a fidget spinner around for 24 hours. We live in a pretty fucked up world.

I’m kidding around, but, I like to work hard for what I own. I have managed to get on the right path. My hometown, everyone was a leech… They would borrow shit and never return it, or sell it, haha. Ask for money, then piss off, call me out after they come back with their group of friends taking the piss outta me while I’m walking around minding my own business. I hated ironic fans, they are worse than trolls.

Jacky:

How did you get into hip-hop?

Mat Demaz:

Pretty much Eminem and D12. They were huge. Their music was the first kind of hardcore/extreme music I listened to. I loved the aggression. With the cultural revolution being at it’s peak in 2000, it felt fitting I would embrace it and absorb anything I could. My musical tastes were molded from those golden years.

Jacky:

You seem to have everyone mapped out! What will your future project contain?

Mat Demaz:

Probably more thrash metal type of stuff. I’ve been working on some slayer-type shit for a while now. This is the type of music I originally did back in 2007, and it’s nice to come back full circle.

Jacky:

Thanks for the quick words, Matt! Talk to you later!

Mat Demaz:

Cheers.

Brisbane Supercell Thunderstorm (27-11-2014)

I don’t know if anyone outside of Australia knows, but a significant storm hit my city a while ago. My house got flooded, but I’ve cleaned everything up.

Pretty scary winds here that approached tornadic speeds:
